When is the right time for a legacy shoot?

Usually, right now. For any age.

You don’t have to wait until you’re 80 to tell your story. Legacy isn’t about having lived a certain number of years.

Legacy is your story—and your story is happening now.

Maybe you’ve retired and entered a new chapter. Maybe you’ve celebrated a milestone anniversary, changed careers, started a new business, discovered a new passion, or simply reached a point in your life where you want to stop and celebrate your life and everything you have done. Celebrate you.

You don’t have to wait.

Your legacy can begin today.

And if you’re thinking about a legacy session for an older parent or grandparent, I would encourage you not to wait. Preserve their stories, and the things that make them who they are, while you still have the opportunity.

A legacy session isn’t about documenting the end of a life.

It’s about celebrating a life while it’s being lived. It’s about feeling, seen, valued and heard and feeling good about it.

So, when is the right time?

When you realize that the story matters.

And that time is very often now.

Respecting Wishes

As a legacy photographer, I listen to my client’s stories during the Legacy Visit. I ask questions and I learn lots about their lives. Some clients are an open book and give lots of detail and others keep it simple. What’s interesting about all the stories told is that I respect and cherish all of them.

Inevitably, during each of these visits, the clients ask why I do what I do. They say, “Well, my story isn’t that interesting, I’m just an ordinary person.” When I explain to them their legacy matters to those that love them and that their story can actually be an inspiration to others, they begin to get it. And actually, they sit taller and I can feel their confidence begin to rise when I tell them that I find their story quite fascinating.

And it’s at this point that the discussion of Timeless Tales by Mag and the storytelling that I do on social media and my website comes up.

Some clients remain uncomfortable about their story being published for “the world to see and read,” and that is something that I am completely ok with and of course respect and understand.

And sometimes, clients change their mind after the shoot is complete. They have enjoyed the full Timeless Tales by Mag experience, and end up feeling quite relaxed about including their life story and images on my website and social media platforms. They see the benefits of sharing their story and understand how it can be uplifting to others.

However, I lead with respect and honor their wishes and boundaries if that’s not the case. Because in the end this is their story and they have the final say on whether to remain private or public with the details.

Yes, I want to inspire others and allow people to feel seen, valued and heard, however, legacy photography isn’t about taking photographs at all costs. It’s about creating enough trust that someone knows that their story will always be treated with respect.

What Does a Legacy Visit Look and Feel Like?

One of the best features that distinguishes my work as a legacy photographer, with Timeless Tale by Mag, is the Legacy Visit.

And here is some background info on why I do them, how they even started and why they are so important.

First of all, the legacy visit is primarily for clients who sign up their elderly loved ones, usually over 70 years of age.

Clients come to me because they want the life stories of their senior loved ones, heard and preserved with a photo session that captures the true essence of their loved one.

But there’s a very important thing to consider ….. This type of photography isn’t just about booking a 30 minute time slot for a shoot and then calling it a wrap. It can’t work that way. That’s too fast for the type of connection that needs to be established.

In order to really allow the seniors to feel comfortable with me as a photographer and for me to really allow them to feel at ease about the shoot, they have to like, know and trust me. And that only comes with a slow process, where time is given to get to know them. That’s how the Legacy visit originated.

I love this part of the experience. We book a time to meet at their residence, and just visit, like the olden days. The visit is chill and usually goes on for a couple of hours. I get offered a drink and cookies or treats, which I also love. I ask questions, and create a casual conversation where I’m really engaging and letting them know that I care about their life story. I smile, we laugh and I show my warmth and interest. Then they usually ask about me and what I do. My latin american heritage always comes up and I tell them that I spent my childhood living in the Dominican Republic where I learned and loved how to visit with my older aunties and listen to their stories.

When I hear that their life isn’t that interesting I always let them know that it is and that it matters.

By the end of the two hours we really know each other well and I tell them about my work as a Legacy photographer. I can always see and feel the difference from the beginning of the visit to the end. They are relaxed, comfortable and ok with the upcoming shoot.

The Legacy visit is a time to connect and it benefits the senior in so many ways. It’s a valuable experience and one that isn’t easy to find these days. It’s a time with no cell phones, no interruptions and a fresh set of ears to listen to their stories. I validate them and their story.

I love the legacy visit and I think it also provides me with connection to my past, but most importantly, we all need someone to validate our story.

The Power of Saying Yes

Saying YES has so much power.

Yes.

Yes to being seen.

Yes to celebrating your journey.

Yes to believing your story matters.

When Denise first contacted me during her treatment for breast cancer, she knew she wanted a legacy portrait experience. But she wasn’t ready. Like so many women, she was still finding her footing after this health challenge.

She knew her story mattered. She simply wasn’t ready to tell it.

Two years later, I received a message from her.

“Mag, I’m ready.”

And saying YES changed everything.

With a studio shoot, we celebrated three extraordinary milestones: Her 60th birthday, five years cancer-free, and the launch of her first children’s book, Everywhere Grandma. We also created her author portrait, which now appears in the book.

But something even more amazing happened after the legacy session.

By saying “yes” to celebrating her story, Denise also shared her story with others.

She opened an Instagram account and honestly, her story, her children’s book, and legacy images resonated with others. Everywhere Grandma became a bestseller, touching families with its message of love, loss, and remembrance.

Then another unexpected opportunity arrived.

Denise was invited to appear on the cover of a community magazine, where she shared her journey as a breast cancer survivor, author, and the woman who chose to say YES. She often tells me she never imagined that saying yes to one legacy experience would lead to so many meaningful opportunities.

That’s what I love most about legacy photography.

The photographs are only the beginning.

When we choose to honour our lives and share our stories, we often discover doors we never knew existed. Confidence grows. Conversations begin. Connections deepen. Opportunities appear. And perhaps most importantly, our courage gives someone else permission to say yes to their own story.

I’ve witnessed this again and again with my clients.

One yes leads to another, and doors open wide. More opportunities arise.

One story inspires someone else.

Legacy isn’t simply about preserving the past.

It’s about stepping confidently into the next chapter of your life.

Sometimes, all it takes is one simple word.

How It Works: “The Timeless Tales by Mag,” Experience

So, you’ve decided to join the “Timeless Tales by Mag” experience. Yeah!

We’ve connected, exchanged a few emails or text messages, signed the paperwork, secured your date, and now the fun begins.

One of the questions I’m often asked is, “What happens next?”

Here’s a look behind the scenes at how we create your legacy experience together.

Step 1: The Discovery Visit

Before I ever pick up my camera, we spend time getting to know one another.

This is one of the most important parts of the process.

We’ll meet over coffee, tea, or in your home and simply talk.

I want to learn about your life, your family, your experiences, your passions, and what matters most to you. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, a life transition, retirement, a personal journey, or simply want to document this chapter of your life, I want to understand your story.

This conversation helps me create a session that is uniquely yours.

Together, we’ll also decide where your session should take place. For some people, the studio is the perfect setting. For others, their home provides a richer backdrop because it contains the people, memories, and objects that tell their story.

There is no right or wrong choice. We decide together.

Step 2: Planning Your Session

Once I understand your story, I begin developing a concept for your shoot.

At the same time, we’ll discuss wardrobe, styling, and the overall look and feel of your portraits.

Some clients prefer help selecting outfits, while others already know exactly what they’d like to wear. We may exchange photos by text, discuss options during a visit, or review pieces together in person.

I generally recommend bringing three or four outfits, along with any accessories, jewelry, shoes, scarves, hats, or meaningful items that reflect who you are.

Meanwhile, I’m busy researching ideas and creating an inspiration board for your session. I often use Pinterest and other visual references to build concepts that reflect your personality, style, and story.

Throughout the planning process, we stay in touch. Questions are always welcome, and new ideas are often exchanged right up until the shoot day.

Step 3: The Portrait Session

The day has arrived.

Whether we’re photographing in the studio or another meaningful location, my goal is simple: to make you feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated.

Most sessions are approximately two hours in length.

We work through your selected outfits, explore different poses, lighting setups, and expressions, and create a variety of portraits that capture who you are.

The session is relaxed, collaborative, and a lot of fun.

Many clients tell me they arrive feeling nervous and leave feeling empowered.
